Webster defines inspiration as a divine influence or action on a person believed to qualify him or her to receive and communicate sacred revelation. This year’s Groundhog Breakfast speaker, Sean Swarner knows the meaning well. He has broken through defined human limitation in order to redefine the way the world views success.

Sean was diagnosed with two completely different types of cancer, once at the age of 13 and again at 16 when he was given fourteen days to live and read his last rights. He astounded the medical community when he survived both these brutal diseases and a medical-induced coma. Sean realized that after defeating cancer twice, no challenge would ever be too great or any peak too high.

Sean proved his theory when he crested the peak of the highest point in the world (Mount Everest) with only partial use of his lungs. As the first cancer survivor to do so, Sean decided to continue climbing and has since topped the highest peaks in Africa, Europe, South America, Australia, Antarctica, and North America.

Swarner is living proof that despite the worst prognosis, there is hope for cancer patients and their families.
“Frankly I don’t know why I’m alive,” Swarner says. “But I’m incredibly grateful for the life I have. Somehow I found the inner will to get up and out of that hospital bed. My message is that people should really enjoy every moment they’ve been given. You have one chance-make the most of it.”

U.S. Chamber Awards Licking County Chamber of Commerce with Accredited Status

Newark, Ohio - The United States Chamber of Commerce today awarded the Licking County Chamber of Commerce with Accredited status for its sound policies, effective organizational procedures, and positive impact on the community.

“Accreditation validates a chamber as having programs that benefit their local economy and for positively influencing action in their community,” said Raymond P. Towle, IOM, CAE, U.S. Chamber Executive Director of Political Affairs and Federation Relations. “We applaud these organizations for advancing the principles of free enterprise.”

Accreditation is the only national program that recognizes chambers for their effective organizational procedures and community involvement. In order to receive Accreditation, a chamber must meet minimum standards in their operations and programs, including areas of governance, government affairs, and technology. This extensive self-review can take 6-9 months to complete.

“This prestigious honor puts us among the top 3% of chambers nationwide”, said President Cheri Hottinger. “Going through the Accreditation process has made us a better chamber and has enabled us to serve our members in ways we never did before. It is certainly a milestone achievement.”

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation representing the interests of more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions, as well as state and local chambers and industry associations.

Industry Meets Educators

Today I participated in an event called STEM Over Lunch at The Works. Here's how it worked: There were eight tables of educators and eight representatives from our manufacturing companies in Licking County. We placed an industry representative at each table and they had eight minutes to talk about how important STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) is to the daily operations of their respective companies. I am thankful for the companies who participated:

Redistricting Maps

From the Ohio Chamber. . .

Federal law requires each state to redraw its Congressional districts every ten years so that each of the 435 members of Congress represents roughly the same number of people. This year, because Ohio’s population has lagged behind other states, Ohio finds itself drawing 16 districts, down from the 18 it previously had. Because Ohio is losing two seats, the combining of districts was inevitable. In northern Ohio, Democratic incumbents Marcy Kaptur of Toledo and Dennis Kucinich of Cleveland now find themselves in the same district. In west-central Ohio, Republicans Steve Austria of Beavercreek and Mike Turner of Dayton will presumably face off in a primary. Also, because of the creation of a new district that contains most of the city of Columbus, Democrat Betty Sutton and Republican Jim Renacci are also now in the same district in northeastern Ohio. State General Assembly districts are also subject to reapportionment to ensure that each district has roughly the same population. A five member panel, known as the Reapportionment Board and made up of the governor, secretary of state, auditor of state, a legislative Democrat and a legislative Republican, is responsible for the new state legislature maps. New Partnership Announced

Today the county, chamber and port authority announced a new private-public partnership which has been created for the sole purpose of economic development. A CIC (community improvement corporation) is in the process of being formed, which will provide unity and direction for economic development - something that has been needed for a long time. The chamber has always had economic development as a key priority and will continue to do everything possible to keep Licking County a thriving place to work, live and raise a family.

We receive a variety of interesting calls each day. I just got off the phone with a man who was looking for a place to do some fishing. He said he knew the Chamber of Commerce would know where to go.

After searching the Internet, I did find him a great site to look at called FishingWorks. There you will find a listing of all the lakes in Licking County where you can go cast a line.

I love it when I learn something new about our community.

Pick Up The Phone

I don't like to use this blog as a platform to rant, but there is a lesson to be learned today.

I recently ended a relationship with a vendor for a variety of reasons. I do like the company, but it just wasn't providing what we needed any longer. When I made the decision to stop using them, I picked up the phone and called them. I didn't want to just send a letter or an email. That seemed cold. I left messages with two different people. The messages just said that I needed to speak with them about our account. I didn't want to "break-up" with them via voice mail either.

Two weeks went by and no return calls. At that point, I sent them a letter, stating that I would have liked to talked with them before sending the letter, but no one returned my calls, etc. and explained that we would no longer be doing business with them and outlined my reasons why.

After another week or so, I received an email from the President of the company asking for me to reconsider my decision. Wouldn't you think that after I complained about not receiving a return call, and if my account was that important to him, he would have picked up the phone and called me? Seriously.

Email has its place. It can be very efficient. But if something is truly important to you, pick up the phone and have a live conversation. It really does make a difference.

Licking County Human Resource Management Association Licking County HRMA Receives Distinguished Award The Society for Human Resource Management has awarded the Licking County Human Resource Manangement Association, the EXCEL Platinum Award for 2010. The SHRM Affiliate Program for Excellence (SHAPE) has been designed to ensure a strong connection between SHRM and our affiliated chapters from a business perspective. In addition to clearly outlining our requirements to measure chapter alignment and engagement with SHRM’s overall objectives, SHAPE’s focus has shifted to activities and initiatives which are more strategic in nature. Honey Caramel

Today I had the pleasure of witnessing the first run of Honey Caramel ice cream at Velvet Ice Cream. This was my first time on the production floor.

As I entered the production area, this sign was posted above the doorway:

What a great message for the employees at Velvet.

It was very interesting to see how the process worked. In this picture, pure Ohio honey is being mixed into the caramel, which is then swirled all through the ice cream.

And then came the best part of all. . .

. . .the taste test. And let me tell you, it was delicious!

Velvet Introducing Four New Flavors for 2011
UTICA, Ohio (March 22, 2011) – Velvet Ice Cream will roll out four new flavors in 2011, beginning with Honey Caramel on March 24.

Honey Caramel was created by Alex Grooms, the 13-year-old winner of Velvet’s 2010 Create-A-Flavor Contest. The ice cream has a vanilla base and includes honey and caramel.

On April 15, Velvet will release Peach Cobbler for the summer. The flavor is based on a submission by Andrea Thrasher, third-place winner of the Create-A-Flavor Contest. Thrasher submitted the flavor idea of a vanilla-based ice cream with peaches and brown sugar clusters.

“This is the first year that we’ve produced two new types of ice cream from our Create-A-Flavor Contest,” said Luconda Dager, president of Velvet Ice Cream. “We think both of these new releases are going to be popular with our customers and we’re excited to get them into the grocer’s freezers.”

Both new flavors will be produced as part of Velvet’s Natural line of products.

Velvet will introduce two new flavors in its Supreme line May 15 - Peanut Butter Overload and French Vanilla.

Peanut Butter Overload is a peanut butter-based ice cream that includes peanut butter swirls and peanut butter cups. French Vanilla is similar to Velvet’s Olde Tyme Vanilla. The recipe includes pasteurized egg, creating a very rich flavor.

Headquartered at Ye Olde’ Mill in Utica, Ohio, Velvet Ice Cream has been a family owned and operated business for nearly 100 years. Founded in 1914 by family patriarch Joseph Dager, Velvet has been run by four generations of the Dager family. Each year, Velvet produces more than five million gallons of ice cream, which can be found in freezer cases throughout the Midwest and Florida. The historic Ye Olde’ Mill, which houses the company headquarters, an ice cream museum and restaurant, attracts more than 150,000 visitors a year.

The Jobs Budget

Yesterday (March 15) Governor John Kasich unveiled his budget entitled "The Jobs Budget".

It included a 'new approach' to Economic Development, with three keys steps to the reform:

Create JobsOhio - a private not-for-profit organization
Provide sustainable funding through Ohio's Liquor Enterprise
Equip JobsOhio with the best talent & tools

Item #1 has already been done, with the passage of House Bill 1.

Item 2 is very interesting. Let's take a deeper look at how this will work.

The reasoning behind this decision is to provide JobsOhio with an on-going funding stream which is NOT connected to the state's general revenue fund and it will enable private funds to be invested into private companies instead of using public dollars, which has proven to be problematic at times.

The Department of Commerce will continue to operate the system, but JobsOhio will acquire the wholesale merchandising component of the business; permitting and regulation will remain with the Department of Commerce.

In exchange for the Ohio's Liquor Enterprise for 20 to 25 years, JobsOhio will pay the state a lump-sum payment and an annuity payment (price for both has yet to be determined). JobsOhio will provide an upfront payment of approximately $1.2 billion; $500 million to the General Revenue Fund and approximately $700 million to prepay the current outstanding liquor profit bonds in their entirety. JobsOhio will be able to do this by issuing revenue bonds backed by the liquor profit revenues. The management of the JobsOhio Liquor Enterprise will be contracted out with the Department of Commerce to manage the day-to-day operation.

Facilities Establishment Fund

Kasich's budget also transfers the Facilities Establishment Fund to JobsOhio. This is a fund held by the Treasurer of the State on behalf of the Ohio Department of Development, which was, interestingly enough, originally funded by liquor profit bonds beginning in 1982. It is currently a self-sustaining revolving loan fund and encompasses programs like 166 Direct Loans, the R & D Loans and the Innovation Ohio loans.

Ohio needs an economic development overhaul. Maybe this is the way to do it.

We Are The Top Manufacturing Country In The World

Last Friday Jack Schultz, author of Boomtown USA gave a wonderful presentation at our Economic Development Summit about how smaller communities can be successful at economic development. It was a very inspiring speech.

Afterwards a few of us had the opportunity to sit down with him and ask him numerous questions about initiatives we are doing and what has and hasn't worked for communities such as ours around the country.

We also discussed what has been happening with manufacturing over the past few years and he shared some great stats with us about how manufacturing in the US is alive and well.

I'm also pleased to be able to share with you a 20 minute webinar that he did for NAIOP. Here is the summary of it:

U.S. Manufacturing

The top manufacturing country in the world is the USA! And, our share of world manufacturing production is the same as it was 40 years ago!

Measuring Your Marketing Efforts

I participated in a webinar today with Social Media Leaps about measuring your social media marketing efforts. The presenter was Brady Cohen with Point to Point.

Cohen covered free tools all small business owners should be using to measure your online presence in the social media world. He said you must make it a priority to monitor the stats and then act upon the results. His definition of social media is content generation.

He provided some sites that can help you understand whether or not your social media marketing is working.

If you have a business Facebook page, have you taken the time to look at your Insights page? It contains information on your page views (impressions), number of likes and unlikes. Pay attention to spikes in these numbers so that you know what your fans like and what they don't. It also displays the demographic info on who is visiting your site by age and gender. You can also see where they are geographically from.

And you can see when (not who) someone unscribes (ouch). This is good to know if something you posted ticked someone off.

It also shows any external referrals to your page. You can monitor these stats on a weekly or monthly basis, depending on how much time you have. You can view our Facebook page here.

Next is Twitter.

There are so many different tools out there to see how far-reaching your tweets are. Tweetreach is pretty cool. You can see the number of users your tweets are reaching, how many impressions you have generated and the level of engagement (RT's Direct Messages, @) and a listing of who is helping to spread your tweets.

Twittergrader gives you a rank based on how influential you are on Twitter. The Chamber's twitter account (Chamberofc) received a 79 out of 100. My personal twitter (Chambercheri) was an 87. I can see we have some work to do.

Cohen also listed some sites that you can use to monitor all your social media efforts like HowSociable and SocialMention.

Bottom line is that if you are trying out social media and aren't keeping track or calculating your ROI, you will never know if it is worth your investment of time and money.

High-Touch to No-Touch

Last week I attended a conference for Chamber Professionals. One of the speakers talked about the trend of going from High-Touch to No-Touch in terms of the way we handle our relationships. He used an example of going to the movies. It used to be a fun, family time to go to the movies. We would see people we knew and have face-to-face conversations about what we liked or disliked about the movie with the other people who were there.

Then came Blockbuster. We no longer had to talk to anyone except the clerk. We rented the movie and took it home to watch it with just family and maybe a few friends.

Now there is Redbox and Netflix. We can just get our movie out of a vending machine or mailbox and not have to have a verbal conversation with anyone.

In today's world of fast and easy, Redbox and Netflix may seem like wonderful benefits, but how much benefit is there if you haven't built loving relationships with people? Yes, I used the word loving. It isn't a bad word. If you building loving, caring relationships with people, and are genuine about what's going on in their lives, they will build a relationship with you and will trust you.

What happens when people begin to trust you? They do business with you.

When is the last time you attended a networking event and asked someone not what they did for a living, but why they chose to do whatever it is they are doing? By asking the why question, you are asking them to tell their story. You have then made it about them and not about you. And when you continue to make it about them and not you, you will begin the building process of a long-term relationship.

And isn't that what we ultimately strive for - long-term clients?

On your next call or event, take the first five minutes and ask the why question. I would love to hear the results.

City of Heath Safety Improvement Project Update

Reg: Project Update Information

February 14, 2011

This is the first in what will be a series of communications you will receive from my office

regarding the Hebron Rd. Safety Improvement Project. My goal is to provide our city’s valuable

businesses and its residents with as much accurate information in a proactive manner as I can.

Hopefully, this information will help you in planning for the needs of your business.

Utility relocation will begin in early April. If there are any interruptions to service, they will

be of short duration. The utility companies will meet with anyone whose service will be

interrupted and arrange to have this done at a time when it is most convenient for the customer.

The rest of the project is divided into three phases. The work during those phases

includes:

Phase 1

 This phase is scheduled to begin on July 9, 2011.

 Milling of the asphalt on Hebron Road will be followed by the road being re-striped. Four

lanes of traffic will flow in the middle of the road (two lanes in each direction), and there

will not be a center turn lane. During this Phase there will be some impact to traffic

caused by the temporary closure of Oberlin Dr. at the intersection of SR79 and

temporary removal of left turn lanes at the intersections of Oberlin/Andover and Putnam

Dr.

 The road will be widened.

 A new water line will be installed down the east side of the road.

 Oberlin Dr. will be realigned with Andover Dr., and Radian Dr. will be realigned with

Putnam Dr., making these intersections safer and providing a better traffic pattern.

 Lane closures will generally occur only between the hours of 10 PM through 6 AM.

 Phase 1 will be completed by November 15, 2011. There will be no construction activity

between November 15 and January 2, 2012.

Phase 2

 Phase 2 will begin January 2, 2012 and involve the installation of the median and

associated landscaping.

 Hebron Road will be restriped, this time moving the four lanes of traffic to the outer parts

of the road, allowing for the installation work to be done on the median.

 Phase 2 is expected to be completed by April, 2012.

Phase 3

 Application of asphalt, road striping and installation of signage will be done during Phase

3. It is anticipated the end of Phase 3, and the conclusion of the project, will be around

June, 2012.

For the duration of the project, I will continue to work to provide you with accurate

information like the above which may be of use to you. If you have any questions, please do

not hesitate to contact John Groff, Chief of Building and Zoning, or myself here at the Heath

Municipal Building (522-1420). We will work with you to try and answer your questions and be

of help to you.

Q: How do we pay down our debt?

A: First of all, the discretionary spending side is about one-third of our budget. We just need to look at every single line item of the budget and ask ourselves, 'When you're borrowing 40 cents for every dollar that you're spending, do we really need to do this?' But that's only one-third of the problem. The big problems are the growing unfunded entitlement programs - Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. And you'll see us this year begin to develop proposals for how we strengthen those programs for the long term.

Yesterday was our 55th Annual Groundhog Breakfast. It has become quite a tradition in Licking County, with close to 700 people in attendance at this year's breakfast.

Thanks to all the wonderful comments our staff has received. This breakfast has its own committee, the Groundhog Committee, (and they are a wonderful group of people), but the real behind-the-scenes, get-your-hands dirty work is done by the staff at the Chamber. A staff of four.

I was told by a fellow Groundhog Committee member Friday night that a big storm is supposed to hit this week and they have named it the Groundhog Day Storm.

Why would I care? Because our 55th Annual Groundhog Breakfast is now five days away - February 4th. We are expecting 650 people - at 6:00 a.m.

I can remember past GH Breakfasts where the roads were bad and the temperatures were well below freezing, but the GH Breakfast still went on as planned.

Economic Impact

I recently attended a meeting of workenomics and heard a startling statistic. In 2010, Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services pumped $231 million into the economy of Licking County.

$231 million.

Around $140 million went to food stamps and programs for the aged, blind and disabled. The remaining amount went to medicaid.

1 out of every 6 people in Licking County were "touched" by ODJFS.

There are certainly different ways of looking at this. On the surface, it would seem a bit disappointing that so many people needed help in our community. But given the economy, that's probably not too surprising.

From a more positive view, the increase usage of those programs did increase employment for those in nursing homes and grocery stores.

No matter what viewpoint you may have on this, $231 million had a strong impact on Licking County in 2010.

House GOP Introduces Bill to Eliminate Ohio’s Estate Tax

COLUMBUS—Assistant House Majority Whip Cheryl Grossman (R-Grove City) and State Representative Jay Hottinger (R-Newark) today jointly introduced legislation to eliminate the Ohio estate tax, also known as the “death tax.” House Bill 3 will allow small business owners, farmers and homeowners to rightfully pass on their assets to their heirs without fear of being taxed twice on their life’s savings, which will make Ohio more competitive for entrepreneurial growth and investment.

“House Bill 3 is just one of the many ways we will be working to aggressively improve the way the state of Ohio does business,” said Rep. Grossman. “When you hear of the 400,000 jobs that have left the state of Ohio, 90 percent of those have gone to other states—not overseas. We need to be more business-friendly, and I think that this legislation is a huge step in the right direction for the people of Ohio and for the generations to follow.”

“We are beginning the process of ending a fundamentally unfair and egregious tax, a tax that is often the case of double taxation,” said Rep. Hottinger. “This bill is about restoring fairness to Ohio’s hardworking citizens, our families, small business owners, as well as our state’s farmers. Ending this tax will have a tremendous effect on job creation in the state of Ohio.”

Ohio currently has the lowest estate tax exemption in the United States. Only $338,333 of the taxable estate is exempt from the estate tax, compared to an average exemption amount of approximately $1.7 million for other states that have an estate tax. For this reason, supporters of the elimination of the estate tax believe that it takes direct aim at Ohio’s middle class, undermines job creation, and discourages saving and investing in the state.

“The estate tax represents essentially a 7 percent incentive for capital to not come to Ohio or to leave Ohio,” said Jack Boyle, executive director of the Ohio Prosperity Initiative. “[House Bill 3] is the beginning of Ohio making its step back to competitiveness. We’ve had a 30-year slide of our state’s economic fortunes, and this is the day that we start changing that.”

“The Ohio Farm Bureau has long stood as an opponent of the estate tax,” said Beth Vanderkooi, director of state policy for the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation. “We’re very excited that Representatives Grossman and Hottinger are going to try to [enact this bill] in Ohio this year, and we’re strongly behind that.”

House Bill 3 was assigned to the House Ways and Means Committee, where it will undergo further consideration.

Health Care Repeal Underway

Today I participated in a conference call with the US Chamber regarding the initiative to repeal the Health Care Bill previous passed.

Next Wednesday, January 12th, HB 2 -a Bill to repeal the Health Care Reform Bill, will be voted on in the House of Representatives. This vote is an up or down vote, no amendments allowed.

Due to the large number of freshman congressmen who campaigned on repealing the Health Care Bill, support for this bill is strong. And interestingly enough, it is only two pages long.

HR 144 will also be voted on next week. This is a Resolution to repeal the 1099 reporting requirements which were snuck into the Health Care Reform Bill. There are 108 co-sponsors of this Bill and it also has strong support.

I am pleased to report that Congressman Pat Tiberi (12th District) not only supports HB 2 and HR 144, but is a co-sponsor of both.

I haven't heard back from Congressman Bob Gibb's (18th District) office yet, but will update this blog when I do.

A Visitor from Missouri

We receive all kinds of mail at the Chamber. Good, bad and occasionally the ugly. This week I received a letter from a woman who recently stayed in our community for a few days.

Sometimes we get so used to seeing the bad things in our community, that we forget all the great things that surround us everyday. It really doesn't take much effort to be friendly to others.

Read what she had to say:

As a recent visitor to your community I would like to express my thanks to many members of your community. A group of five of us women came to Newark to make baskets at the Longaberger factory. We opted to take advantage of a package deal offered by Longaberger.

We stayed at The Place Off The Square. The hotel was very nice with Longaberger items throughout. The staff was helpful and friendly, explaining all that was offered in our package. We received breakfast for two mornings and lunch for one day. We were also able to make baskets, tour the Homestead and other things through this Longaberger package. However, this was just the beginning.

I walked around downtown Newark one morning and admired the cleanliness of the community. The older buildings downtown with arched windows were nice to admire. My favorite was an old limestone jail that needs to be restored so that I can come and tour! I also loved the bronze displays of Mark Twain, the grandfather and the women chatting. The picnic tables around the courthouse were a nice touch - I hope your citizens take advantage of your friendly community.

We spent the day at the Longaberger factory, making baskets and enjoying the morning with our assigned Longaberger staff. I want to thank Richard for his help with my baskets. I believe Joe helped some of the other members of my group. And a female staff member helped one member of my group - she too was very friendly by Jo Ellen could not remember her helper's name. We then enjoyed a delicious lunch and shopping.

Upon our return to Newark we decided to do a little antique shopping. It was close to five o'clock and the staff at Matilda Charlotte Antiques, Inc. said she would be glad to stay until we were finished shopping. For what more could a person ask?

We chose to spend an evening at Buckeye Winery (also part of our package). The wine drinkers in our group enjoyed a tasty wine slushy. We all enjoyed crackers and cheeses, that were chosen, at our request, bu our host and were delicious. The staff at Buckeye Winery were kind and helpful, also. We had forgotten to bring our coupon so the staff at the winery simply called The Place, and it was promptly handled.

We ate dinner at The Grill Chop House. What a wonderful choice! We received a discount on our meals because we were staying at The Place. Again, we were treated to excellent food and wonderful service. Anthony, our server, was prompt, efficient and readily answered our questions about the community.

On our way out of town one of my friends wanted to stop at the bakery for snacks for the trip home. There was a cute little cake with one candle and Jamie wanted to buy it (Jamie's son was celebrating his first birthday the next day). The staff at Riley's Bakery & Catering informed Jamie it would not survive a nine hour trip but offered to GIVE the cake to her. Again, our food was delicious and the service even better.

I want to thank you and your community members for the delightful few days we spent in Newark. It is not often that travelers have only positive experiences - but we did. This was the second trip to Longaberger for some of my group but our first stay in Newark. We are already planning our trip for next year and because of our delightful experiences we have more friends that want to come with us.

Buzz Word of the Day

. . .is uncertainty.

Today I, and others, met with Congressman-Elect Bob Gibbs. We wanted to familiarize him with Licking County, especially our economic development diamond, the 79Seventy Advanced Materials Corridor.

After he listened to us, he shared what his top priorities would be when he gets to Congress. His #1 is reducing deficit spending. Period.

He went on to say that uncertainty about what Washington is going to do in 2011 is the driving factor for lack of investment on all levels, personal and business alike. When consumers don't know what the taxation level is going to be or what programs will or will not be extended, it causes so much uncertainty that they (consumers/investors) freeze up and put off decisions, causing our economy to stall.

Later in my day I was in another meeting where uncertainty on the state level was mentioned. We were discussing budget issues and whether or not a certain program would be funded again in the new budget cycle. It makes it difficult to make a decision on whether or not to move forward with a new project when you are taking a big risk not knowing if the funding will be there or not. Holding up a project for six months when a developer is ready to go now does not make for a happy developer nor a happy community.

I am one that would just like to know the facts, make a decision and move on. Although I may not like hearing the truth or bad news, I would much rather know what I have to deal with rather than play a long, drawn-out game of uncertainty.

Uncertainty can suck you dry in terms of efficiency and productivity. It causes doubt, which can lead to mistrust and skepticism. Not something you want in your workplace or even your personal life.

Don't be the person who is causing these feelings at home or at work. Just make the decision and deliver the news.

The Brew & Wine Fest was a big success, but it wouldn't have been such a great event without the help of MANY people. I would like to thank Cheri, Mandy and Vicky at the Chamber first and foremost for being awesome! Then a big thanks goes to Patrick Guanciale, Tim Fitterer, Shawn McDonald, Cheri Hottinger, Dave Hardy and Todd Harrold for bartending that night. It's a huge job and you all do it well. To Sam Schnaidt and everyone at Apple Tree Auction Center, thanks for providing a wonderful facility to host this event. Mike Morris went above and beyond the call of duty as our Events Chair along with his wife Connie, selling 50/50 tickets, cleaning up and directing traffic. Ruth Handelman, Amber Favuzzi, Erika Molyneux and Craig Young from the Events Committee did whatever it took to help with trash, supplies and clean up - much appreciated. Licking County Chamber Issues Endorsement

October 6, 2010

The Directors of the Board of the Licking County Chamber of Commerce has endorsed the 5 year, 0.2 mill levy for the Licking County Park District. This levy will raise $740,000 annually and will cost the average homeowner only $.50 cents per month.

“Without the passage of this levy, our communities will suffer a great loss when programs and facilities will no longer be able to be available for everyone to use”, said President Cheri Hottinger.

Hottinger went on to say that by having a thriving parks system, including the 36 miles of bike trails, gives Licking County a heads up on other communities when companies are looking to relocate their businesses.

The Licking County Park District manages 11 parks totaling over 1600 acres of open space along with over 36 miles of bike trails. In the past 20 years, over 4.7 million visitors have utilized the parks and the trails.

They're People, NOT Staff

It's been a while since I was assigned "homework", but at our September Community Leadership of Licking County class, I received my first homework assignment in years. By the October class, I am expected to have read approximately the first 100 pages of the book The Leadership Challenge, by Kouzer & Posner.

Although I am the official Director of this Leadership Course, I had not read the book and wanted to play the role of student with regards to learning the principals of leadership addressed in this book. I have a friend who operated the Leadership Ashland Program who is walking us through the book, like she did up there.

This morning I was doing my "homework" and came upon something I wanted to share with you. It has to do with your people.

The book gives real-life stories of those who exemplify leadership. One story hit on the importance of taking care of your staff. Read this:

"We are a very, very candidate-driven business," Claire told us. But even more important to her than the candidate is her staff. She fervently believes that if you take care of your staff, they will take care of the candidate; if the staff takes care of the candidate, the candidate will take care of the client; and if the candidate takes care of the client, the client will return to the SG Group for more business. Claire puts her staff first, knowing that they are the ones that ultimately determine the reputation of the company.

She goes on to say:

"We are human beings. We don't have employees. We don't have staff. We have people, and people have emotions, and people have needs. If you are happy you do a better job. If you are excited about the business, and if you are excited about where it is going and what is happening in it, then there is a buzz, a physical buzz. It's my job to create that kind of place."

How well do you know your people? Do you know their names? Do you know about their families? Do you know what really makes them happy?

If not, you should make it a priority to do so. Even if you have hundreds of 'people', you can start with just one and go from there. It will make a difference not only to that one person, but to your company as well.

Why Twitter Matters

I had a very interesting day today. Spent the day with the Ohio Central Railroad touring the 79Seventy Advanced Materials Corridor on a Hi-Rail vehicle with Rick Platt and two site selectors. (story for another post)

On our way back to Columbus we got on the subject of social media, Twitter especially. A comment was made by one of the site selectors that she utilizes Twitter for the instant research capability it has. She went on to say that when doing research on a community, she can get an immediate feel for it via the comments on Twitter, both good and bad.

A similar story was told at our Annual Dinner by Don the Idea Guy. He said if you think your competition or your customers aren't on Twitter, you are dead wrong. "Just do a search", he said.

Whether you like it or not, the use of social media is not going away anytime soon. The level at which you participate is up to you, but what you can't do is ignore it because your competition certainly isn't.

COLUMBUS - Today, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce Political Action Committee (OCCPaC) announced its endorsements in races for three statewide offices. OCCPaC endorsed John Kasich for Governor, Jon Husted for Secretary of State, and Mike DeWine for Attorney General.

“These endorsements represent the leadership we need to retain and attract businesses to Ohio,” said Jeffrey S. Gorman, Chairman of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. “They are not about where we have been; but rather where we must go if we are to, once again, be a state where businesses grow, families prosper, and a stronger economic environment exists for all.”

“OCCPaC took the unusual step of endorsing in selected statewide races this year because our state faces tremendous challenges that are demanding more from each of us, including the Ohio Chamber, “ said Andrew E. Doehrel, President and CEO of the Ohio Chamber. “Clearly, this action is not without risk, but we felt it was critically important for Ohio’s largest, oldest and most diverse business organization to boldly step forward when our leadership matters most.”

Mr. Doehrel went on to say, “the members of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce respect and appreciate the service of Gov. Ted Strickland during a very difficult time for our state. But, for Ohio to thrive, we need new vision, new ideas, and new energy. That is why we have endorsed John Kasich for Governor. We believe John will use his valuable experience and courage to inspire all Ohioans to make the hard choices that lie ahead”.

“We are also pleased to endorse Jon Husted for Secretary of State. Jon has a deep understanding of the business community and will work tirelessly to ensure that the Secretary of State’s office does everything it can to help improve our state’s business climate. We are also pleased to endorse Mike DeWine for Attorney General. The Attorney General’s office can have a paralyzing effect on economic growth if its powers are not exercised with discretion, balance and fairness. We believe Mike is the best candidate to hold this office,” Mr. Doehrel concluded.

The OCCPaC did not endorse in the offices of Auditor or Treasurer. “Although these races have drawn excellent candidates, we believe it is best to focus our attention on the offices that have the greatest impact on Ohio’s business climate and economy,” Mr. Doehrel said.

Founded in 1893, the Ohio Chamber of Commerce is Ohio’s largest and most diverse statewide business advocacy group. The Chamber works to promote and protect the interests of its 4,000 business members, large and small, while building a more favorable business climate and economy,” Mr. Doehrel said.

Early Voting Begins on September 28

Beginning on September 28, any Ohio registered voters can begin casting their votes by mail thanks to No Fault Absentee Voting.

The Ohio Chamber has an excellent resource center that you can log onto and get an absentee ballot or voter registration information.

It is also a great place to get voting records on state candidates.

I am still a traditionalist though. I will be casting my votes at the polls on November 2nd.

Write-In Candidates

As I was mailing out the 2010 Candidate Questionnaire's for the November election, I noticed I was missing a few addresses for the U.S. Senate Candidates so I called our local Board of Elections, wh0 are always so helpful.

They gave me the addresses I needed and then asked if I knew that an Independent had filed along with a write-in candidate for that race, which I did not know.

That got me thinking about why anyone would think they would have a chance as a write-in candidate. I mean it would take an enormous amount of effort to have people ask for a special ballot and then have them write your name on it. Seems impossible.

But not as impossible as I thought.

Remember Strom Thurmond? U.S. Senator from South Carolina. He ran as a write-in candidate in 1954 and was the first person ever to be elected to Congress as a write-in candidate.

Another example closer to home is Ohio Congressman Charlie Wilson. He was elected in 2006 as a write-in candidate.

And in our own backyard, years ago, Owen Lee was elected to Newark City Council as a write-in.

Lesson here: What may seem impossible, may not be, given some effort.

I am always amazed how construction projects progress through different stages.

Chamber Announces Addition to Leadership

Newark, OH - The Licking County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the promotion of Jennifer McDonald to the position of Vice President. Jennifer has served in several roles throughout her 17 years employment with the Chamber, most recently as Communications and Marketing Director.

In this new position Jennifer will assist President Cheri Hottinger with overseeing Chamber operations as well as developing and marketing Chamber events. In recent years, she has implemented a “green marketing campaign” through email blasts, e-newsletters and e-calendars, as well as developed new programs and events, like the Lunch & Learn series and the Development Review Newsletter. Hottinger is excited about Jennifer’s new role. She is confident that “Jennifer’s ideas and experience will help the Chamber succeed and grow, and is excited about her transition as Vice President.”

Aside from her new role, Jennifer is active in the community and serves on the Campaign Cabinet and Marketing Division for the Licking County United Way. She serves on Our Futures in Licking County Operations and Public Relations Committees and COTC Alumni Council. Jennifer is a member of the Chamber’s Events Committee and the Economic Development Committee. She is an active member of the Heath Church of Christ. Jennifer resides in Heath with her husband Shawn and two boys, Austin, 16 and Parker, 13.

I was in a meeting this week with an organization who I thought was there to make a pitch to me and others. I expected and assumed that they would have done their research about who we are and what we do. I was dead wrong.

They had absolutely no idea about their neighboring county. Not only did they not do any research, they didn't speak our language.

Needless to say, I'm not interested.

Just like individual consumers, small businesses experience advertising misrepresentations, billing disputes, unauthorized charges, shoddy workmanship and poorly performed services. And now, businesses can turn to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office for help, too.

For the first time since it came into being 40 years ago, the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection section is accepting complaints from small businesses and non-profits who are being ripped off by scams or who are being treated unfairly in business transactions. In the year since we launched this service, we have responded to over 1,200 complaints to help small businesses and non-profits get their money back or otherwise rectify injustices done to them. Total recovery of funds in these matters so far is over $115,000.

Strategic Planning For Your Business

The Small Business Development Center of Newark and Licking County is sponsoring a three-session seminar on strategic planning for your business. The seminar will be held at the Newark Public Library, 101 W. Main Street, Newark, Ohio, starting August 5th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

The following two sessions will be held on August 12th and 19th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.

Attendees will be provided with the materials to create and finish a strategic plan on an issue of their own choosing. Explanations will be provided of each step in the strategic planning process and attendees will be given time to fill out their planning templates for the strategic issue they chose.

During the workshop, attendees will:• Session 1 August 5th: Learn about the Strategic Plan process and how to apply it any time on any issue.• Session 2 August 12th: Select a strategic issue specific to his or her business.• Session 3 August 19th: Finish a first draft strategic plan for the issue.
